Natalie was first called to the Bar in 2014 and worked as an employed barrister for multiple government departments and statutory bodies before transitioning to the private Bar in 2023. She has extensive experience in regulatory prosecutions, inquests and inquiries, forensic mental health matters, and administrative reviews.
With over a decade of experience in regulatory prosecutions, Natalie is intimately familiar with all facets of the law and practice for this type of matter. She has acted for various departments during her employment with the Queensland government in a diverse range of prosecutions, including for planning offences, environmental offences, and work health and safety matters. She has experience in all aspects of these matters from legal advice to investigators and internal departmental clients, to preparing for and appearing in interlocutory applications, trials, sentences, and appeals. Natalie has appeared regularly as Counsel for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy. She also has experience working as part of a team for some of the most complex prosecutions conducted by the State.
Natalie's experience in coronial inquests includes matters involving the deaths of workers killed at workplaces, fatigue management, persons lost at sea, and misadventure at national parks. She also has experience in inquiries, recently acting for the mining safety regulator at the Coal Mining Board of Inquiry. She enjoys coronial and inquiry work, particularly where the State has multiple agencies involved that are providing a multi-faceted, whole-of-government response.
Through her time as a government lawyer, Natalie acted for the State in reviews of administrative decisions, including about the classification of vegetation, cancellation of authorities and certificates of competency, and reviews of directives issued by the safety regulator. She also appeared daily in the Mental Health Review Tribunal for over two years and was regularly involved in appeals to the Mental Health Court.
