MICHAEL WOODFORD

Michael was called to the Bar in August 1998. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Queensland University of Technology (1997) and a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting & Finance) from Griffith University (1992).

Michael has continuously appeared in all aspects of the criminal process and related proceedings over the last two decades. He has appeared in some of Queensland’s most complicated and lengthy criminal trials. Examples include appearing for Dr Jayant Patel in the Bundaberg Base Hospital manslaughter trial, appearing for the Commonwealth Crown in trials concerning the collapse of the Kleenmaid group of companies and appearing for the Commonwealth Crown in trials concerning the laundering of funds into Australia from the Chinese Foshan Housing Fund.

Michael has appeared in appellate work for both convicted defendants and as Crown Prosecutor for the Commonwealth Crown.

Michael has been retained as counsel in various inquest and inquiry matters. Examples include as counsel for the Master in the Wunma Marine Board of Inquiry, as counsel assisting the Child Protection Commission of Inquiry, as counsel assisting the Crime and Misconduct Commission at a closed inquiry and as counsel for a party at the Crime and Corruption Commission inquiry into electoral integrity, Operation Belcarra.

Michael sat as a member of the Parole Board in 2012-2014 and gained valuable practical experience with public board governance and the law of decision making. He developed skill in administrative law during that time and has since appeared for various interests in statutory review and judicial review proceedings before various boards, tribunals and courts.

Michael has been published in the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand Journal and his work has been cited by both the United Kingdom Supreme Court and the England and Wales Court of Appeal.

Michael is a senior member of Fullagar Chambers, a group that has had a strong criminal law presence in Queensland since the early 1970s.

Michael is available to accept briefs to advise and appear in all Australian jurisdictions.
